Bachelor of Business Administration (Tourism and Hospitality Management)

Maritime Greenwich College, with the Tourism Institute Australia (TIA), offers students from all around the world the opportunity to come to London to study the TIA BBA specialising in tourism and hospitality management.

TIA is based in Adelaide, South Australia and is accredited by the South Australian Government under the Australian Qualifications Framework to award undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

COURSE OVERVIEW
With the rapid growth in the tourism and hospitality industry there is an increasing demand for professionals and managers in the industry with sound exposure to modern business and management practices related to the tourism and hospitality industry. The TIA BBA
(Tourism and Hospitality Management) is designed specifically for working adults and high school graduates with limited work experience to:

The TIA BBA (Tourism and Hospitality Management) has been designed to:

bulletassist students to acquire a systematic and coherent body of knowledge in management and the underlying principles and concepts and problem solving techniques to deal with the complex issues that arise from these considerations;
bulletdevelop in participants the academic skills and attitudes necessary to comprehend and evaluate information and management concepts from a range of perspectives; and
bulletdevelop in participants the ability to review, consolidate, extend and apply the knowledge and techniques learnt to real organisational situations and evidence from a range of sources.

Mode: Full-Time (2-3 Years) 15-21 hrs a week

Commencement: September, January and July of every year

UK Residing Students   £3,000 per year
Overseas Students      £4,000 first year and £3,000
                               per year from second year
Total tuition fees for 3 years £10,000

The fee covers tuition and assessments.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTIONS

Information and Communications
This subject develops skills in managing conflict and negotiations, facilitation skills in group problem solving and decision making, the management of effective working relationships and the development of effective information management skills.

People I
This subject is designed to develop skills in managing and developing teams, planning, organising and controlling work to effectively achieve goals and in establishing goals for performance measurement.

Operations 1
The purpose of this subject is to develop skills in the efficient and effective operations in organisations through customer service, productivity, innovation and change.

Finance I
This subject is designed to develop skills in the effective operational and financial performance reports; budgeting; and optimizing financial performance through reducing costs and improving efficiency.

Tourism and Hospitality Management Perspectives
This subject provides participants with an understanding and appreciation of the theory, practice, development and effects of tourism. It also provides foundation knowledge in the area of hospitality management.

Marketing I Principles and Practice
This subject provides information in the establishment of operational strategies and techniques that meet the marketing objectives of organisations.

People II
This subject is designed to develop skills in the recruitment, selection, induction, training and development of staff as well as the development of skills to effectively manage grievances, disputes and workplace issues.

Leadership Issues
The purpose of this subject is to enable participants to manage more effectively in conditions of change, uncertainty and ambiguity; facilitate taking difficult decisions; to develop strategic leader behaviours; and create and maintain quality management for organisations and individuals.

Finance II
The aim of this subject is to develop skills in the identification and application of the fundamentals of financial management in the operations of organisations with the emphasis on maximising financial returns to expenditure, and investment in operating and capital assets.

Operations for Tourism and Hospitality
This subject introduces concepts on the maintenance of operational activities through the effective and efficient management of operations, logistics, cultural diversity, risk and projects, with specific emphasis on the tourism and hospitality industry.

Marketing for Tourism and Hospitality
This subject provides concepts and skills in the establishment of operational strategies and tactics that meet the marketing objectives for hospitality or tourism organisations.

Strategic Management Principles and Practice
The purpose of this subject is to provide is to develop strategic thinking skills through preparing a strategic management project plan for a selected organisation

Business Ethics and Social Responsibility
The purpose of this subject is to enable participants to understand the nature of business ethics and social responsibility, identify and evaluate the responsibilities of senior executives and company directors and identify and evaluate cross-cultural ethical codes, positions and dilemmas.

Contemporary Legal Issues
The purpose of this subject is to provide participants with an understanding of the basic concepts of relevant legal issues in the workplace so that they can contribute to the effective management of their workplace.

Tourism Information Technology Issues
The subject addresses tourism and information technology issues and reviews the synergy between the two related industries.

Small Business Management
The purpose of this subject is to enable participants to identify and employ strategies and actions to effectively manage small business.

Entrepreneurial Issues
The purpose of this subject is to enable participants to understand current issues in entrepreneurship.

Professional Meetings and Event Co-ordination
This subject provides the concepts and competencies required to be a professional meeting/ event co-ordinator. It also analyses the essential services that provide the necessary infrastructure for meetings/ events and examines the creative and practical aspects of co-ordinating meetings/ events.

Integrated Project 1 & 2
This capstone subject requires participants to develop and initiate a tourism or hospitality related project for an organisation of their choice; and develop a detailed business plan for the project.

ASSESSMENT
For each module (except the Integrated Project 1 & 2, for which the students will be required to undertake a major assignment), students will be required to complete an assignment and an examination. The assignment is worth 20% and the exam is worth 80% of the overall grade for the subject. The students must pass the examination to pass the subject.

ENTRY CRITERIA

For admission into the BBA course, applicants must:

have gained the equivalent of 2 GCE A Levels – D grade minimum; and

bullet

satisfy at least one of following requirements for English proficiency:  
 

  1. the medium of instruction of the applicant’s tertiary studies was in English;

  2. a score of 525 or better on the TOEFL;

  3. a score 5.5 or better on the IELTS;

  4. a credit or better in English in the GCE “O” or “A” levels or equivalent; or

  5. any other evidence of proficiency in English acceptable to EIA’s Registrar.
