This qualification is needed to register with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB). Pharmacy technicians are part of the pharmacy team and work under the supervision of a pharmacist. They are involved in the supply of medicines and products to patients. The opportunities for specialization and increased responsibility extend with experience. There are a number of management, administration and specialist roles undertaken by pharmacy technicians.

There is demand for pharmacy technicians in both the health service and the retail/community sector. Hospital technicians seeking promotion usually undertake further study in a specialized area. There are five grades of technician in NHS hospitals. In the community retail sector, promotion can mean moving into management, sales or marketing.
